At C1, you can

  • Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching
  • Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning
  • Use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes
  • Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects
  • Follow extended speech even when it is not clearly structured

What is still out of reach

  • Reading effortlessly across every register, including specialised and literary text
  • Conveying finer shades of meaning with complete precision

What C1 Italian looks like in practice

Three situations, and where each of them stops. A level is easier to recognise from the moment it runs out than from a definition.

  • Chairing a discussion

You can run a meeting, cut in politely, summarise what has been said so far and keep several threads in the air at once.

  • Reading a long report

You read a dense text at speed, recognise the claims it makes implicitly, and notice where the writer's hedging is doing work.

  • Telling a story

You can hold a table's attention, land a joke and adjust it as you go — the part of a language that arrives last and matters most socially.

How long it takes to get here

Reaching C1 from scratch typically takes 700-800 hours of guided learning — the range Cambridge English publishes, and a range rather than a number because it depends on you and on how close your first language already is.

Getting from C1 to C2

C1 to C2 takes several hundred hours more, and unlike every earlier step it cannot be studied in a straight line. What moves you is range: unfamiliar subjects, unfamiliar registers, and conversations you have not had before.

C1 improves through range rather than repetition: unfamiliar topics, unfamiliar registers, and conversations you have not had before.
