What is B2 French?

B2 is the level most universities and employers ask for. You interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes conversation with native speakers possible without strain on either side, and you can argue a viewpoint rather than just state one.

What B2 French looks like in practice

Three situations, and where each of them stops. A level is easier to recognise from the moment it runs out than from a definition.

  • A job interview

    You can answer a question you did not prepare for, give an example to back a claim, and ask something specific about the role. Under pressure you may simplify what you mean; you rarely fail to say it.

  • Following a lecture

    You can take notes from a talk in your own field and hold on to the argument, including the parts where the speaker digresses.

  • Writing an email that lands

    You write clearly and at the right length. Register is the remaining risk: a sentence can be perfectly correct and still read as blunter than you meant it.

How long it takes to get here

Reaching B2 from scratch typically takes 500-600 hours of guided learning — the range Cambridge English publishes, and a range rather than a number because it depends on you and on how close your first language already is.

Getting from B2 to C1

B2 to C1 takes roughly another 200 hours, and the gains come from precision rather than coverage. At B2 you can say the thing; at C1 you say the exact thing, in the register the situation asks for, without pausing to assemble it.

From B2 the gains come from precision and register — saying exactly what you mean, in the right tone, rather than something close to it.
