What is C2 English?

C2 is the top of the CEFR scale. You understand virtually everything you hear or read, summarise information from different sources coherently, and express yourself precisely enough to convey finer shades of meaning even in complex situations.

What C2 English looks like in practice

Three situations, and where each of them stops. A level is easier to recognise from the moment it runs out than from a definition.

  • Negotiating

    You can hear what the other side has carefully not said, and answer it without naming it — the point at which language stops being the variable in the room.

  • Reading across registers

    You can read a novel, a contract and a tabloid in the same day and feel the difference in all three, rather than decoding each one equally.

  • Writing to be read

    You can write something that reads as though the writer grew up in the language. The question is style now, not correctness.

How long it takes to get here

Reaching C2 from scratch typically takes 1,000-1,200 hours of guided learning — the range Cambridge English publishes, and a range rather than a number because it depends on you and on how close your first language already is.

What comes after C2

There is no level above C2 to reach. What replaces progress here is maintenance: without regular use, speed and precision fall away long before comprehension does, and they are the harder half to get back.

At C2 the risk is losing it, not lacking it. Regular conversation is what keeps a language at this level.
