Keyword GOAT

/əʊ/as in “go”

How to make it

Starts: tongue half-high and back in the mouth, lips rounded. Glides to: tongue fairly high and back in the mouth, lips rounded.
  1. American: start with rounded lips, as in a short "or".
  2. British: start with relaxed lips and a neutral "uh".
  3. Then glide towards "oo", rounding your lips more.

Common mistake

Holding one pure "o" with no glide, which makes "coat" sound like "caught".
